Chapter 12
Clay
WITH WILLOW SITTING across from me, I watch her as she talks on the phone to her roommate, and listen as she fills her in on what happened with Carly. From what Iâve gathered listening to her side of the conversation, her roommate is out of town and, up until a few minutes ago, she had no idea that anything was even going on with Carly. And now Willowâs filling her in which doesnât seem to be going over well.
âSorry,â she mouths to me.
I lift my chin then watch her rub her forehead as she continues talking.
âYouâre right, I should have told you, but I didnât want you worried. I know youâre already stressed, dealing with your parents.â Willow meets my gaze and then closes her eyes. âYouâre right, sorry.â She rubs her lips together then drops her eyes to the table. âI promise Iâll keep you filled in on whatâs going on. Right now they donât know much. Okay.â She lets out a long breath. âOkay, and let me know if you need me to come rescue you and Iâll be on the next flight.â Her gaze meets mine once more and she bites her bottom lip before whispering. âIâll let him knowâLove you, too. Bye.â She hangs up and places her cell phone on the table next to her drink.
âWhat are you supposed to let me know?â I ask.
The worried look on her face slides away. âThat Leah will hurt you if something happens to me.â
âShould I be scared?â
âSheâs a doctor with access to lots of drugs, so probably.â She shrugs.
I smile. âYou hadnât told her about Carly?â
âNo.â She picks up the diet coke she ordered when we sat down and takes a sip. âShe is in Florida with her mom and dad who just moved there. Her mom is a lot on a good day, and I didnât really want to worry her with this when I wasnât sure my imagination wasnât being overactive. I was going to call and tell her about things this afternoon when I had lunch, but I only had a couple minutes between clients so there wasnât really time to explain things properly. This is the first time I really had to talk to her.â
âHave you told your dad?â I ask only because itâs obvious this is something he would want to know.
âMy parents and siblings are on an Alaskan cruise right now. I sent him a text but Iâm not sure when heâll get it because service on the boat is non-existent.â
âYou didnât want to go with them?â
âI wasnât invited.â She laughs. âI should have clarified that itâs a cruise with my parents and my married siblings and their kids. I havenât joined that cool club yet.â
âDo you want to?â I pick up my drink.
âWhat? Get married and have kids?â She fiddles with her straw.
âYeah.â
âEventually.â She looks across the restaurant then she quickly looks down and mumbles something under her breath before grabbing her bag from the seat next to her and starts digging in it.
